The No Single Use Fashion Campaign
Wear the culture. Make the impact. Keep it going.
Music and Fashion Unite
No Single Use Fashion is a movement uniting the fashion and music industries to drive real change in sustainability. Our mission is to champion sustainable fashion at live music events and push back against the culture of single-use, disposable clothing.
We’re here to challenge the idea that clothes should be worn once and thrown away. Together, by bringing music and fashion into alignment, we can redefine what it means to get dressed—choosing longevity, creativity, and conscious style over waste.
The Problem
The global fashion industry produces over 100 billion garments each year, spanning luxury, high-street, independent, and fast-fashion brands. Within that, fast fashion—built for speed, low cost, and rapid trend turnover—drives much of the industry’s overproduction and the rise of disposable, single-wear clothing. Its push for constant newness fuels overconsumption and strains supply chains through waste, resource use, and labor exploitation.
The music industry is part of this dynamic—and here’s how.
Did you know? A 2019 study found that about 7.5 million outfits are purchased each year for music festivals and worn only once. Most are fast-fashion pieces made from synthetics that linger in landfills and leak microplastics into our oceans. Behind the sparkle lies a hidden cost—paid by people and the planet.

Fashion accounts for up to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. A single T-shirt can use 2,700 liters of water; dyeing and finishing contribute an estimated 20% of industrial wastewater; and synthetics shed microplastics with every wash. Every second, a truckload of clothing is dumped or burned.
Meanwhile, many workers face low pay and unsafe conditions to meet relentless demand—seen clearly in festival fashion, where single-wear looks are pushed over pieces that last.
So the question is: Are we ready for a change?
Good—because live music events have the power to spark a cultural shift. By choosing how we consume, rewear, repair, and reimagine what we own, we can make style last longer than a setlist and turn fashion and music into a force for connection, not consumption.
The 3 Options
It’s time to choose differently.
Keeping it simple, BLACK PEARL has created three easy ways for live-music fans to take part in the No Single Use Fashion campaign and show up to events sustainably.
Choice 1: Pre-loved
Opt for pre-loved, second-hand or vintage pieces to create your gig look—whether from clothes swaps, hand-me-downs, or resale platforms.
More than 100 billion garments are produced globally each year, even though we already have enough clothing to last six generations. Choosing pre-loved reduces demand for new production, respects existing resources, adds personal meaning, sparks creative finds, and offers simple, practical ways to build a unique wardrobe with real impact.
Choice 2: DIY
Use your creativity to personalize what you already own—switching buttons, adding trims, or sewing on patches to make it uniquely yours.
These small updates reflect your values, strengthen your connection to what you own, and offer simple ways to extend a garment’s life. Studies show that repairing or customizing pieces can add up to two years of use, and that visible repairs, upcycling, and creative alterations can extend wear by 1–2.5 years, reducing waste and saving resources.
Choice 3: Hold On
Look after, rewear, and actively hold on to your concert outfit for at least 9 months, don’t throw it away after a single wear.
Every year, millions of tons of clothing end up in landfills—about 37 kg of textile waste per person in the U.S., roughly 3.1 kg in the UK, and around 16 kg per person in the EU overall. While numbers vary by country, the message is clear: extending the life of your clothes reduces waste and respects the resources behind what we own.

FAQs
What is the #NoSingleUseFashion campaign
The #NoSingleUseFashion campaign encourages
live music fans to break the cycle of single-use fashion by rewearing
outfits, thrifting, or creatively customizing clothing. The goal is to reduce fashion
waste and promote sustainable style within the music and entertainment industry.
Why have these three pledge options been chosen?
The pledge options of DIY, pre-loved, and holding-on were chosen because they are accessible to everyone. These approaches remove common barriers, such as budget or inclusivity, and make it easy for people to participate in sustainable fashion wherever they are.
How can event organizers and artists participate in the campaign?
Event organizers can help drive sustainable fashion through attendee participation. By promoting the campaign to audiences before events—through social media and in-fan communications—organizers can encourage attendees to pledge against disposable fashion. They’ll also be equipped with shareable graphics, branded materials, and direct pledge links to make engagement easy.
Why engage musicians for a sustainable fashion movement?
Fashion is one of the most visible ways artists express who they are. When musicians advocate for sustainable fashion, they’re not just making a style choice—they’re sharing a message about values, identity, and the future they want. Fans often emulate their favorite artists, so sustainable choices naturally ripple outward, shaping buying habits and supporting more ethical systems. In a world facing climate and waste crises, artists have the power to turn culture toward solutions.
Merchandise
For the No Single Use Fashion campaign, our apparel collection—featuring an organic cotton T-shirt and an organic cotton and regenerative hemp hooded sweater—focuses on minimizing environmental impact.
Fast, disposable fashion is already problematic because it’s designed with a short life span in mind—but many of these garments are also filled with chemicals that harm both the planet and our bodies. That’s why we’ve teamed up with bluesign, using bluesign® APPROVED fabrics.
What is bluesign?
bluesign is a system—not a label—that works with brands, mills, and chemical suppliers to ensure safer materials, cleaner production, and full traceability. Founded 25 years ago to keep harmful substances out of clothing from the start, it remains a leading standard for responsible manufacturing.
